John Aloysius, Jr. was born on 8 October 1921 at 615 W. 46th Street in Chicago, Illinois and baptized on 30 October 1921 at St. Gabriel's Catholic Chruch in Chicago, Illinois. He is the sixth child and the fistborn son of John Aloysius McDermott and Elizabeth "Lizzie" White.

John met and married Betty Lorraine Peters on 2 Sep 1945 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Arcata, Humboldt County, California. Together, they had 5 children: Michael Edward, James Martin, John Anthony, Virgina Marie, and Donald William.

John was retired from the US Navy and the US Post Office. John died on 18 Oct 2002 in Milpitas, Santa Clara, California. He was cremated.

Betty was born on 4 September 1925. Betty retired as a CEO of a federal credit union.
