Laverne Agnes was born on 7 Jul 1924 in Chicago, Illinois. She is the eighth child (and the sixth girl) of John Aloysius McDermott and Elizabeth "Lizzie" White and the baby of the family.

Laverne met and married Hugh Francis McKinley on 18 October 1947 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church. Together, they had six children: Margaret Elizabeth, John Robert (adopted), Susan Marie, Kathryn Ann, Nancy Patricia, and Thomas Gerard.

Laverne died on 17 Jan 1994 in San Antonio, Bexar, Texas and was buried on 22 Jan 1994 in St. Mary's Cemetery, Evergreen Park, Cook County, Illinois. She died of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (A.L.S.) or Lou Gehrig's disease.

Hugh was born on 10 August 1919 in Chicago, Illinois. He died on 30 December 1974 in San Antonio, Bexar, Texas. He was buried on 4 January 1975 in St. Mary's Cemetery, Evergreen Park, Cook County, Illinois.
