Tracing the McDermott Family Line

The McDermott Family Line consists of the McDermoitts, the Fitzpatricks, the McHughs, and the Hannons. There is not much about the McDermotts in Ireland with the exception of a marriage and a birth. Much of it starts in England.

The Ninth Child and the Fourth Son of Michael and Mary McDermott: Leo Thomas

The Grave Marker for Uncle Leo

The 1930 Chicago Census with Uncle Leo, Aunt Caroline, and Cousin Leo

Uncle Leo's Draft Registration 5 Jun 1917

Uncle Leo was born on 15 Apr 1895 in Chicago, Illinois. He was baptized on 28 Apr 1895 at St. Basil-Visitation Church, Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

Uncle Leo met and married Caroline Gradt, which must have been the talk of the family, as she was Jewish. They divorced at some point in time. Uncle Leo died on 8 Oct 1947 in Chicago, Illinois.

Caroline died on 4 Feb 1954 in Chicago, Illinois and was buried at the Waldheim Cemetery, Chicago, Cook, Illinois on 8 Feb 1954. Waldheim is a Jewish Cemetery, from my understanding. Together, they had one son, Leo Thomas Jr.

Her obituary states: 1954-02-07 Chicago Tribune (IL) GRADT Edition: Chicago Tribune Caroline Gradt, beloved daughter of the late John and Augusta, dear sister of Erna Masa and the late William, sister-in-law of John Masa, aunt of John, George, William, and Richard Gradt, Carolyn Hendricks, Edith McDermott, and the late Corp. Robert Masa and Harriet Gradt. Resting at funeral home, 2130-32 W. 21st street. Eastern Star services Sunday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m., under auspices of Waller chapter, No. 823. Funeral Monday, 2 p.m. Interment Waldheim. VIrginia 7-7758. Copyright 1954, Chicago Tribune.
